Environmental Hazardous Conditions on Chalcogenide Glass

The chalcogenide glasses, arsenic sulfide (As2S3) and arsenic selenide (As2Se3) are very stable.   According to the best of our knowledge, using arsenic sulfide and arsenic selenide glass below 150°C is safe for handling, storage, and transportation.  As2S3 and As2Se3 glasses have high stability to atmospheric moisture and crystallization below 170°C.  Safety Data Sheet describes As2S3 and As2Se3  glasses as non-hazardous and do not absorb through the skin.

Arsenic sulfide and arsenic selenide fibers are insoluble in water, concentrated hydrochloric acid, alcohol, acetone, and gasoline.  These fibers are highly soluble in strong alkaline solutions.

With regard to medical applications, there is no data for the arsenic sulfide and arsenic selenide glass fibers used in vivo.
